The OTHER thing financial advisors forget to mention (or don’t KNOW)

When I mentor other advisors, a lot of times I see that they are using 10-12 percent rates of return for the stock market. Certainly this isn’t accurate for the past ten years, but the argument I often hear to justify those rates is that they are averaging overall returns over the long term—over 20, 30 years or more.

Codependency and Money

I think most people understand that spending money ineffectively can be about an addiction, but recently I discovered that destructive behaviors with money are also closely linked to codependency, which at a high HIGH level means you think either you’re responsible for everything that happens (giver) or your responsible for nothing that happens (taker). The most common usage of this term is for partners who enable their spouses in their chemical addiction. We rarely think about enabling behavior around money.

Sometimes people ask me, “If I’m not in debt, should I have a budget?” I say yes. Your spending habits are your greatest clue to tell if something is dysfunctional in your family dynamic or individual behavior. You might not be damaging your financial situation, but if you’re blind to the issue, you could be hurting your family or yourself.

My Personal Budgeting Anecdote

Now that I have encouraged you to track your spending on Mint, I’d like to tell you how tracking my spending helped me. I used to have a coffee habit – I know, shocking, considering I live in Seattle! I used to have a fancy coffee drink once a day, sometimes twice a day. I was never spending fewer than $5 per day on coffee.

Pictures of Yummy & Noki

This isn't really about financial planning, just wanted to show off the newest additions to the family!  Meet Noki, my gray tabby who LOVES the the indentation where the cushions meet on the couch . . .

And Yummy, who is always ready for a game!

Noki likes to follow Yummy around like a little sister, and she always wants to wrestle . . .

 But sometimes it gets old for Yummy, so she has to get a little grumpy!
